SINGLE FIN COMP WENT OFF!!!!

On Saturday morning AKWA Surf hosted a fundraising 70’s retro single fin tag team comp. With perfect weather and a really good pulse of swell and everyone ready in a great mood promised a fun day.
Around 70 surfers lined up and were put into their respective teams randomly by the good old method of pulling names out of a hat, with 16 teams there was a touch of nostalgia with all the names like KB Larger, Evil Kenevil, Ali, the Crotched bikinis etc
As the 1st heat hit the water for something never seen before in our town the bench mark expectation was high, and the 1st heat of the day delivered just that with amazing surfing including a massive floater from Mick Malmo combined with some nudity from Jason Purser, this really set the scene for the rest of the competitors and hilarity was thrown into every heat  other honourable mentions also go out to: Jason "Bullfrog" Evans - clear winner of the best dressed category for surfing in his full 70's kit, including a massive afro wig, knee high socks and shoes - even swimming in at one stage to retrieve his board. Charlton "accident" Fogarty - for free surfing and ending up in hospital receiving 7 stiches to his foot, Brad Parsons - for wearing absolutely hideous ladies swimmers out to surf his first heat, Greg Orphin for sculling a whole beer before he hit the water for his heat and put on an effort to rival Karl Stefenovic after the Logies and Orbit - for sparkling all day!!!!
All the crew at the bbq and beer tent: forgive me if I forget you: Moggy, Brad, Greyhound, Wally, Tommy, Jimbo for taking the registrations, Tim for the tunes, everyone else for just an awesome day with heaps of laughs, and more importantly a clean beach when we left - great to see! Couldn't have done it without board riders trailer 
We did have a winning team an in the end it was Congratulations to the milky way’s: Bart Smith, Kerry Perkins, Mark (can drink!) Galton & Mitchell Veitch! Mark's 10 point wave was on highlight of the day! He ensured the perfect score by promptly pulling a can of rum & cola from his short pocket and sculling it the whole way in, backed up with a massive tally from Bart Smith stole the final.
With everyone in such a jovial mood the contest had repeated “best day ever” from all the contestants will make this an extremely hard act to follow up next year but we will try.
There was a serious side of the event and it was to raise the awareness of early dementia which Paul Morgan spoke about at the presentation. The fundraiser combined with the auction held the previous night raised well over $20000 for the Morgan family, such a huge effort.
